Matt's the NLSF GM...Here's our chat with Matt

Earlier this fall, the crew at DRIVEN – Canada’s Powersports Webstore had a chance to chat with Matthew Swain, the GM of the Newfoundland & Labrador Snowmobile Federation…here’s how it went.

Matthew, tell us all more about you prior to starting in the position as GM with the NLSF?

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in the Conception Bay North area before moving to Corner Brook in 2013.  The move to Corner Brook was tied to my post-secondary pursuits.  I’ve been on the west coast ever since.

Where did you go to school?

I attended Persalvic Elementary school before moving to Carbonear Collegiate for high school and CNA in Corner Brook.

Who introduced you to snowmobiling and when?

My Father introduced me to snowmobiling at age 11 when he purchased my first snowmobile, a Yamaha Bravo 250.

What’s your fav TV show?

The Big Bang Theory

 Fav food?

Burgers

 What makes you smile?

My family, and of course snowmobiling!

In season, what does a typical day look like for the GM of the NLSF?

Typically, my day starts with checking on trails that have been groomed the night before, answering emails and/or inquiries and finding solutions to any issues that may arise. I ensure our employees have what they need to complete their work and am always working on ways to move the NLSF forward.

What does 2024 look like for the NLSF?

2024 will look much the same as the past number of years, we will continue to work on improving our trail network and fleet of grooming equipment. We are always looking for opportunities to grow the organization and keep it moving forward.  2024 will see the intro of the NLSF Trail App…this tool will put the users in better touch with the trail system from their Smart phones.

What are some of the challenges you think we’ll face for 2024 and how do you think we should tackle them?

Some of the challenges we face for 2024 is modernizing our equipment to more efficient and environmentally friendly machines and the possibility of a shorter winter season like we’ve been experiencing over the last number of years. We are continually replacing our older equipment with newer models that are more reliable and efficient to ensure that we are providing the best possible product for our pass holders.  The NLSF and all the great regional clubs are predominantly staffed by volunteers…these folks put in countless hours, ask for little recognition…here in this province (NL), we have an incredible product, the envy of other provinces, so for 2024, I hope we see patience, collaboration and support for this beautiful sport, snowmobiling.
